☆２２ Harvesting Festival

Welcome back to a new entry! ~♡

This time it's about the "Harvesting Festival" I attended last weekend in a small town, close to Kakunodate!
It was organized by a small community, containing of some local families, who're always participating - or well 'doing'- the farmstay, students from AIU, Akita College and Akita Prafectural University (??) could attend. I didn't attend the farmstay, as it collided with my schedule but we were offered three places for this festival and gladly I was able to participate!

Dieses Mal über das "Ernte Fest", das ich letztes Wochenende  in einem kleinen Dorf in der Nähe von Kakunodate besuchen durfte.
Es wurde organisiert von einer kleinen Gemeinde, die dort auch regelmäßig den Farmstay durchführt, den Studenten der AIU, des Akita Colleges und der Präfekturuniversität Akita (??) besuchen dürfen. Ich habe dort zwar nicht gemacht, weil das mit meinem Stundenplan nicht ging, aber für dieses Event wurden uns noch drei Plätze angeboten und ich hatte das Glück mitgehen zu dürfen!

As there were three universities participating, we were a group of 40 students in total I guess and it took us about 1 1/2 hour to get to our final destination. On our bus trip there, we made a short 'toilet stop' at the same roadhouse, we stopped by as we drove to Kakunodate! The one with the soy sauce ice-cream! Some of the others tried it this time too, but I was sorry (or not so sorry) to decline. I was surprised to met someone from the other university that I know; Zaya the girl from Mongolia who was visiting us for the AIU Festival, attended the farmstay too!
As we arrived we got split up in the farmstay groups. Every family had offered a short home for about 5 to 6 students from a lot of different countries. I was lucky and go into the same group as Zaya, with a korean girl and a woman from Peru. We were asked to prepare a photo album for the host families as a gift. I wasn't that helpful, as I didn't even know the host mom, so I went to the kitchen instead!

Da drei Universitäten beteiligt waren, waren wir eine Gruppe von vielleicht 40 Studenten, die 1 1/2 Stunden unterwegs waren,bis wir an unserem Ziel ankamen. Zwischendrin machten wir an der selben Raststätte halt, die wir schon auf unserem Weg nach Kakunodate besucht hatten, die mit dem Sojasoßeneis. Einige der Anderen haben es probiert, ich habe dankend abgelehnt. Ich war überrascht, jemand von den anderen Universitäten zu kennen, aber Zaya, die Freundin von Hishige aus der Mongolei, die uns für das AIU Festival besucht hat, hat auch teilgenommen und mich gleich erkannt! Als wir ankamen wurden wir in die verschiedenen Familien eingeteilt; jed Familie hatte 5 bis 6 Austauschstudenten aufgenommen. Ich hatte Glück und kam in die selbe Gruppe wie Zaya, zusammen mit einer Koreanerin und einer Frau aus Peru. Wir wurden dann gebeten, für die Hosteltern ein Fotoalbum zu basteln, aber dabei war ich keine große Hilfe, da ich die Familie nicht einmal kannte, also bin ich in die Küche gegangen.

As Akita is famous for rice, we made 'mochi'. For mochi you need to have fresh cooked rice and batter it, untill it's kind of a really sticky dough. It takes some time and some effort, as you need to add water too (but not too much of course!) and the hammer is pretty heavy, but it's totally worth the effort in the end!
There are even some people, who choked on mochi and died. lol

Da Akita berühmt für Reis ist, haben wir "Mochi" gemacht. Für Mochi braucht man frisch gekochten Reis, den man zermanschen muss, auf gut Deutsch, bis es eine Art klebriger Teig ist. Es dauert eine Weile und braucht einige Mühe, da man auch noch Wasser hinzugeben muss (aber natürlich nicht zu viel!) und der Hammer recht schwer ist, aber es ist die Mühe im Endeffekt wirklich wert!
Es gibt sogar Menschen die sich an Mochi verschluckt haben und gestorben sind. lol

There are a lot of different kinds of mochi, we mad some filled with anko and covered in peanut powder (the yellowish ones), some with chocolate (the brown ones) and some with black sesame (the black ones), and all of  them were super delicious!!! My favourite is the peanut one though, I unfortunately always forget their name....
And last but not least, there was even a non-sweet mochi, with umeboshi. Umeboshi is sour pickled plum and the opinions varies about the taste lol I personally don't mind it, although it's a strange mixture between sour and salty.

Es gibt sehr viele unterschiedliche Arten von Mochi, wir haben welche mit Anko gefüllt und mit Erdnussstaub bepudert (die gelben), mit Schokolade (die braunen) und mit schwarzem Sesam (die schwarzen) gemacht, und alle war mega lecker!! Mein Lieblingsmochi ist allerdings das mit Erdnuss, von dem ich leider immer den Namen vergesse.
Und zu guter letzt gab es auch noch eine nicht-süße Variante, mit Umeboshi. Umeboshi ist sauer eingelegte Pflaume und die Meinungen darüber gehen seeeehr weit auseinander. Ich persönlich finde nichts schlimmes daran, obwohl es eine seltsame Mischung aus sauer und salzig ist.

After we prepared the food, everyone ate and chatted and it was a really nice atmosphere. I even felt comfortable enough to talk some japanese, which I'm most of the time pretty reluctant to do with strangers.
Later we had some time to go for a walk and I chosed JT ( a girl from my japanese class) and Mayu (a japanese girl I met this day).

Nachdem wir das Essen vorbereitet hatten, haben alle gemeinsam gegessen und sich unterhalten, was eine sehr schöne Atmosphäre war. Ich hab mich sogar wohl genug gefühlt, Japanisch zu sprechen, was ich Fremden gegenüber eher selten mache.
Später hatten wir dann noch Zeit, ein bisschen spazieren zu gehen, und ich habe mich JT (ein Mädchen aus meinem Japanischkurs) und Mayu (eine Japanerin, die ich dort kennen gelernt habe) angeschlossen.

Soon after that, we left and drove back home.
I had a great time with lots of lovely people and it felt so good to be there ♥ Great Experience! It was nice to see, that even some older people, living in rural areas are interested in cultural exchange and open minded to other cultures.

Kurz darauf sind wir aber auch schon wieder nach Hause gefahren.
Ich hatte eine sehr schöne Zeit dort, mit sehr netten Menschen und ich habe mich wohl gefühlt ♥ Schöne Erfahrung!  Es war schön zu sehen, dass auch ältere Menschen in ländlicheren gebieten an Kulturellem Austausch interessiert und anderen Kulturen aufgeschlossen sind.

☆１５ COS - Community Outreach Service

Hello Everyone ~♡
The upcoming two days the AIU Festival takes place; a big festival on the campus, organized and performed by the students. For weeks now, nearly every japanese student here works so hard for it; making decorations, practising dances, practising other performances, etc. and since a week or even longer, some of them even sleep in the buildings to be ready in time.
Some of us international students joined them for performances, selling food at food stalls or for making decoration and I can tell you, the atmosphere is amazing. Even it at night, there are so many people working in the buildings and you can see everything growing from day to day, whereas everyone is still so motivated and happy!
That's to the current things going on here, but I'll tell you more in my next entry about this!

In den folgenden zwei Tagen findet das AIU Festival statt; das ist ein riesiges Fest auf dem Campus, das von Studenten organisiert und durchgeführt wird. Seit Wochen schon, arbeitet beinahe jeder japanische Student sehr hart dafür; Dekorationen müssen gemacht werden, Tänze und andere Aufführungen geprobt werden, etc.pp und seit etwa einer Woche, schläft die Hälfte von ihnen (wenn überhaupt) in der Uni, um rechtzeitig fertig zu werden!
Einige der ausländischen Studenten sind zu ihnen gestoßen, sowohl für die Aufführungen, alsauch bei den Vorbereitungen oder um Essen an den unterschiedlichen Essensständen zu verkaufen und ganz ehrlich; die Atmosphäre ist gigantisch. Sogar mitten in der Nacht (ich kam heute morgen um halb fünf nach Hause...) arbeiten noch so viele Menschen dort und man sieht, wie es von Tag zu Tag mehr wird, während immer noch alle so motiviert und fröhlich sind!
So viel zu den derzeitigen Ereignissen hier, aber näheres dazu im nächsten Blogeintrag!

Today's Entry is about COS - Community Outreach Service, as the title already says. COS is an organization at the AIU, that is coordinating events for international students to interact with the local Akita people and it offers a huge variety of different tasks, one can do. A lot of highschools / kindergartens often ask for some international students to help their english classes, some schools are helding special harvesting events, which we are invited to join or there are even some homestays some times.
Sounds awesome right?
For some of these events you get even payed! (although nearly everyone of us would do this for free as it is so much fun♥)

Der heutige Eintrag dreht sich, wie der Titel schon sagt, um COS - Community Outreach Service (in etwa; Service um die Gemeinschaft zu erreichen), eine Organisation an der AIU, die Veranstaltungen für Internationale Studenten koordiniert, bei denen diese mit den Menschen in Akita in Kontakt kommen können, und sie verfügt über eine immense Anzahl an Events, an denen man teilnehmen kann. Viele Schulen / Kindergärten fragen an für englischsprechende Studenten, um ihren Englischunterricht zu unterstützen, manche Schulen veranstalten besonderes Erntefeste, an denen man teilnehmen kann und manchmal gibt es sogar Programme, um in einer japanischen Famiie zu bleiben für eine Nacht.
Klingt ziemlich gut, oder?
Für die Teilnahme an einigen Veranstaltungen wird man sogar bezahlt! (Obwohl das so gut wie jeder auch ohne machen würde, einfach weil es so lustig ist ♥)

The procedere is imaginable easy; COS is sending out mails, concerning each event and if you want to take part in it, you have to go to the COS bureau and sign up for it. And you need to be fast, because most event's are highly admired! Then you just show up at the meeting point and the fun starts.
I had only one time the opportunity to attend a COS event, because my schedule is for COS a little bit unlucky, and you're of course not allowed to skip classes for COS - although everyone appreciates your attendance in it!
On wednesday I went with two other students to a Kindergarten in Daisen City for a "Curry Party!" (I worked in a kindergarten before studying and OH MY GOSH (Q_______Q) I ♥ children)

Das Prozedere ist denkbar einfach; COS schickt e-mails für jedes Event an alle Studenten und wenn man teilnehmen möchte, muss man ins COS Büro marschieren und sich eintragen. Und wenn es geht, einer der Schnellsten sein, weil die meisten Events sind doch wahnsinnig beliebt. Dann nur noch rechtzeitig zum Treffpunkt kommen und ab gehts.
Ich hatte bisher erst einmal die Möglichkeit an einem Event teilzunehmen, da mein Stundenplan ein bisschen unglücklich für COS Aktivitäten ist, und es ist natürlich nicht erlaubt, für COS den Unterricht zu schwänzen, obwohl wirklich jeder hier, die Teilnahme in einem Event befürwortet.
Am Mittwoch bin ich mit zwei anderen Studentinnen in einen Kindergarten nach Daisen City gefahren, für eine "Curry Party!" (Ich habe in einem Kindergarten gearbeitet, bevor ich studiert habe UND OH GOTT ich ♥ Kinder (Q___Q))

The task was pretty easy; we were asked to help the children cut the things you need for a japanese curry (onions, potatoes and carrots, the meat was already prepared) and play a little english - japanese game with them.
As this was a very special event for the kindergarten, some of the mothers helped too and it was pretty crowded and loud, but really cute on the same time. The kids are just so adorable

Die Aufgabe war denkbar einfach; wir wurden gebeten, den Kindern beim Schneiden der Zutaten zu helfen (Zwiebeln, Kartoffeln und Karrotten, das Fleisch war schon bereit) und ein kleines Englisch - Japanisch Spiel mit ihnen zu spielen.
Da das ein sehr besonderes Event für den Kindergarten war, waren auch viele Mütter dort um zu helfen, somit war es ziemlich laut und voll, aber so süß gleichzeitig. Die Kinder sind so niedlich.

I think btw that some of the mothers weren't that much older than me (my speaking partner told me, that Akita is the prefecture in Japan, with the highest birthrate in Japan) and some of them had already two children. I do feel really old and weird here some times, honestly... And it's not because they look younger, they're definately younger, we talked about that.
Japanese mothers are really cute in general!

Ich glaube im Allgemeinen, dass viele der Mütter nicht sehr viel älter waren als ich (Akita ist wohl die Präfektur in Japan mit der höchsten Geburtenrate in Japan laut meiner Tandempartnerin) und manche hatten sogar schon zwei Kinder. Ich fühle mich hier durchaus manchmal alt und seltsam um ehrlich zu sein... und es liegt nicht daran, dass sie jung aussehen, sie sind es wirklich, wir haben darüber gesprochen.
Japanische Mamis sind alle so süß!

Japanese children are small and cute but some of them ate like 3 plates of curry?!? I don't know where they're putting all this, but definately not inside of their body!
Japanische Kinder sind klein und süß, aber einige von denen haben glatt 3 Portionen Curry verdrückt?!? Ich weiß gar nicht, wo das hinessen, also in ihre Körper mit Sicherheit nicht!

For all of you, who don't know what a japanese curry is; a picture.
It's basically some vegetables (you're pretty free in that, but mostly it's potatoe, sweet potatoe, pumpkin, carrots or / and onion) and some meat, with a sauce, that's is actually never self made. lol It's a little package you're just mix with some water and there you go. And yes, that's a typical japanese meal.

Für alle, die nicht wissen was ein japanisches Curry ist; ein Bild.
Es ist grundsätzlich ein bisschen Gemüse (Da ist man eigentlich ziemlich frei, aber meistens ist es doch Kartoffel, Süßkartoffel, Kürbis, Karotten und / oder Zwiebeln) und Fleisch mit einer Soße, die eigentlich nie selbst gemacht ist. lol Es ist eine aus der Packung, die man nur mit Wasser mischen und tadaaa, Fertig. Und ja, das ist ein typisch japaniesch Essen.

Typical japanese, we took some pictures and I'm still amused, how naturally all these children behaved professional in front of a camera. Probably the good training of their parents, who knows.
Typisch japanisch haben wir natürlich auch Fotos gemacht und ich bin nach wie vor amüsiert, wie natürlich die Kinder sich professionell vor der Kamera verhalten haben. Wahrscheinlich schon gut trainiert von ihren Eltern.

I'm always so happy, when I see something in Japan I didn't know, and yes there are still so many things that are completely new to me. I haven't ever heard about the desert we ate this day and I unfortunately didn't take a picture but it was jelly with milk and as disgusting it sounds, as good was it. xD I liked it, although I didn't know if I should really try it...
Ich bin nach wie vor immer noch begeistert wenn ich in Japan Dinge finde, die ich noch nicht kannte und ja davon gibt's eine ganze Menge. Ich hatte beispielsweise noch nie von dem Desert gehört, das wir an dem TAg gegessen habe und ich habe leider auch vergessen ein Foto davon zu machen, aber es war... Jelly mit Milch und so widerlich das klingt, so lecker war es eigentlich xD Ich mochte es, obwohl ich mir anfangs nicht mal sicher war, ob ich es probieren sollte...

After eating we went home again and I had class, but I really enjoyed this day! I definately try to attend as much COS events as I can and I recommend it to everyone, coming to AIU! You need a work permit for most of the events, but you can get it at the COS, too.
But that's it for today, I'm going for a run now and later working with the Haunted House for the AIU festival again!

Nach dem Essen sind wir dann wieder heimgefahren und ich hatte Unterricht, aber mir hat der Tag sehr gut gefallen! Ich werde definitiv versuchen, so viele COS Aktivitäten wie möglich zu machen und ich empfehle es auch jedem der hierher kommt! Für die meisten Events braucht man zwar die Arbeitserlaubnis, aber die bekommt man auch bei COS.
Das war's dann aber auch schon für heute, ich gehe jetzt wohl ein bisschen laufen und dann wieder mit am Haunted House für das Festival arbeiten.

☆１３ 角館祭り - Kakunodate Matsuri

Hello Everyone ~♡
As already expected, I got busy after two weeks here in Akita, as the university captured me in full and I had been doing some other things amongst studying. I think I won't have more time in the future, so I probably can't update more often than I do now, but I won't neglect the blog, don't worry ~
The trip I'm writing about took already place about a month ago, shortly after we've arrived at AIU.

Wie bereits erwartet, holte mich die Uni bereits nach zwei Wochen ein und ich war ziemlich beschäftigt, da ich nebenher auch noch anderes getan habe. Ich denke mal, dass es nun so bleiben wird, ich werde also nicht öfter als jetzt schreiben können, den Blog aber natürlich nicht vernachlässigen.
Der Ausflug, über den ich heute schreibe, fand bereits kurz nach unsrer Ankunft in Akita, vor knapp einem Monat statt.

We get to Kakunodate by bus, taking a short break at a roadhouse, near a town that is famous for a special kind of ice-cream, which we had to try of course!
Well, if you ever get the chance to try this special SOY SAUCE Icecream be prepared to taste a strange buttery taste. lol That's what most people said, it tastes a bit like butter (and I forgot to take a picture shame on me)
Wir nahmen einen Bus nach Kakunodate und legten einen kleinen Zwischenstopp an einer Raststätte ein, die in der Nähe eines Dorfes liegt, das berühmt ist, für eine bestimmte Art von Eis - was wir natürlich probieren mussten!
Solltet ihr jemals die Gelegenheit haben, dieses SOJASOßE Eis zu probieren, lehnt dankend ab, oder macht euch auf einen Geschmack nach Butter gefasst. Das war, an was es die meisten von uns erinnert hat. (Und ich habe vergessen ein Bild zu machen, Schande auf mein Haupt)

The next stop was Tazawa Lake, which is the deepest lake in Japan and as a sideline, really beautiful too! It started to rain as we stopped there, so it was not so nice, but I think it's really beautiful when the weather is better. The golden statue is said to be a girl, who wanted to be really beautiful, so she came to the lake every day and drank the water. One day she eventually turned to gold. It sounds weird, but that's how the story was taught to us...

Der nächste Stop war Lake Tazawa, dere größe See in Japan und nebenbei gesagt ziemlich hübsch! Es hat leider angefangen zu regnen, als wir dort ankamen, das war nicht so gut, aber ich denke es ist sehr schön dort, wenn das Wetter besser ist! Man sagt, die goldene Statue war ein Mädchen, das unbedingt wunderschön sein wollte, also kam sie jeden Tag an den See und trank das Wasser daraus. Eines Tages wurde sie dann zu Gold. Das klingt komisch, aber so wurde mir die Geschichte erzählt...

And then we finally reached Kakunodate, which is an old samurai village, with a lot of historical buildings and special festivals around the year. We went to the one, where the carried these huge vehicles through the town and crash them at a point later. I forgot what that's good for, but I guess there had been a reason... long long long time ago...?
The group of people I was hanging around with, missed the actualy festival because we had been in the wrong part of the town, due to misinformation but oh well... we enjoyed ourselves nonetheless with loads of delicious food!
We had tickets for entering two of the "Samurai houses" which were pretty cool! I do like history a lot and was really interesting. Especially the gardens in these houses are always so beautiful ♥ Always a reason, to go to the countryside in Japan, away from the big cities!

Und dann hatten wir endlich Kakunodate erreicht. Kakunodate ist ein altes Samuraidorf, in dem es nach wie vor zahlreiche historische Gebäude und eigene Festivals ums Jahr herum, gibt. Wir haben an einem teilgenommen, bei dem sie große Wägen durch die Stadt getragen haben, um sie am Ende gegeneinander zu schmeißen. Ich hab vergessen wozu das gut sein soll, aber ich glaube, es gab einen Grund. Vielleicht...also lange Zeit zuvor.
Die Gruppe, mit der ich unterwegs war, hat das eigentliche Festival leider verpasst, da wir im falschen Teil der Stadt waren aber mein Gott - wir hatten sehr gutes Essen und haben das genossen!
Wir hatten auch Eintrittskarten für zwei der Samuraihäuser, in denen alles noch so ist wie damals, was richtig cool war. Ich mag Geschichte ja eh und das war wirklich interessant. In solchen Häusern finde ich besonderds die Gärten immer sehr schön, sie sind so anders als in Deutschland! Zudem ist das immer ein Grund, mal aufs Land in Japan zu fahren, fernab der ganzen Großstädte ♥

A entry with a lot of pictures, I hope you don't mind and enjoyed it! The quality could had been better with my other camera but I had been too lazy to take it with me.
If you ever have the chance to visiti Kakunodate Matsuri (Matsuri is btw the japanese word for festival), go there and enjoy your time! There's plenty of food and everyone is nice and friendly!

Ein Eintrag mit sehr vielen Bildern, ich hoffe das stört euch nicht und es hat euch gefallen! Die Qualität der Bilder könnte besser sein, hätte ich meine andere Kamera mitgenommen, aber ich war zu faul.
Solltet ihr jemals die Chance haben, Kakunodate Matsuri (Matsuri ist im Allgemeinen das japanische Wort für Fest ) zu besuchen, genießt eure Zeit dort! Es gibt jede Menge gutes Essen und die Menschen sind aufgeschlossen und freundlich!
Und mit diesen Eindrücken lasse ich euch für heute auch allein.
