☆７ Big City Lights - The Arrival

A big hello to everyone! ~♡

If you followed the countdown on the right side of the blog, you might recognized that I'm in Japan for a bit over two weeks now! Woop woop - excitement!!
Plans had been, that I'm telling you a few things about my time in TOKYO during my stay there but due to a miserable web connection and loads of meetings and stuff I couldn't make this, I'm sorry! Therefore I decidd to postone my talkings about this fabulous city to a later date and start with the actual topic of this blog!

Wer den Countdown auf der rechten Seite des Blogs verfolgt hat wird bereits bemerkt haben, dass ich seit etwas über 2 Wochen in Japan bin - Woop woop Freude!!
Der eigentliche Plan war, dass ich ein wenig über TOKYO schreibe, während ich dort bin, aber aufgrund miserabler Internetverbindung und ziemlichen vielen Treffen konnte ich das leider nicht realisieren, tut mir Leid! Daher habe ich beschlossen, die Posts über Tokyo auf später zu verschieben und  mit dem eigentlichen Thema dieses Blogs zu beginnen!

This picture was taken yesterday and it is the view out of my window in the dormitory of my university and yes, I'm still in Japan but not in Tokyo any more!
The university I am attending for the upcoming year is located in AKITA! Never heard of that before? It's a prefecture as well as a city in the north of Japan, famous for it's dogs (Akita Inu), Sake (not the reason I came here, honestly!) and obviously rice. The 秋田国際教養大学 (Akita Kokusai Kyōyō Daigaku - Akita International University, short AIU) is a pretty young university, only 10 years old and is hosting a bit more than 160 exchange students this semester! All in all about 1 000 students are studying here, everyone something international and everyone of them has to study abroad for a year too, otherwise they're not allowed to graduate from AIU.
So everything is pretty international here, but nonetheless it's easy to speak japanese in daily life as far as I experienced it yet.

Das Foto habe ich gestern aufgenommen und es zeigt den Blick aus meinem Wohnheimzimmer der Universität und ja, ich befinde mich nach wie vor in Japan, nur nicht mehr in Tokyo! Ziemlich ländlich, hu?
Die Universität, die ich nun ein Jahr lang besuchen werde, liegt in AKITA. Noch nie davon gehört? Akita ist eine Präfektur und eine Stadt ganz im Norden Japan und bekannt für ihre Hunde (die Akita Inus), ihren Sake (nicht der Grund warum ich hergekommen bin, ehrlich!) und Reis. Die秋田国際教養大学 (Akita Kokusai Kyōyō Daigaku - Akita International University, oder kurz und im Folgenden AIU) ist eine ziemlich junge Universität, gerade 10 Jahre alt, die dieses Semester das erste Mal über 160 Austauschstudenten beherbergt! Alles in Allem studieren hier an die 1000 Studenten irgendetwas internationales und jeder von ihnen, muss ebenfalls ein Auslandsjahr absolvieren, sonst ist es ihnen nicht gestattet, zu graduieren.
Dementsprechend ist alles sehr international hier, die Studenten kommen aus allen Herren Ländern, aber es ist dennoch sehr einfach, im täglichen Leben Japanisch zu sprechen, soweit ich es bisher mitbekommen habe.

The university is pretty far away from the actual city (at least for me), you have to take a bus that takes 15min and goes once per hour, so it's not really comfortable. I have been to the city only one time, so I don't know for sure but it seems like there's nothing much at all, except a few shops and few restaurants. Therefore most of the student life takes place on campus. That's not bad at all, because there are so many different opportunities to join circle, clubs & committes (I'm actually thinking about joining three at the moment. *laughs* Need to decide on one!) or simply meet up with people from different nations and chat a bit.

Die Universität selbst ist relativ weit entfernt von der eigentlichen Stadt (zumindest für mich), da man einen Bus nehmen muss, der etwa 15 Minuten braucht und nur einmal pro Stunde fährt - es ist also nicht wirklich komfortabel. Bisher war ich erst einmal in der Stadt, daher kann ich das nicht sicher sagen, aber es scheint dort nicht so sonderlich viel zu geben, außer einigen Geschäften und ein paar Restaurants. Das ist aber auch der Grund, warum der Großteil des Studentenlebens auf dem Campus stattfindet und das ist ziemlich cool, da es so viele Möglichkeiten gibt Clubs, Circles oder Kommittes beizutreten (Ich überlege gerad bei dreien *lach* aber werde mich wohl für eines entscheiden müssen!) oder einfach nur Leute aus unterschiedlichen Ländern zu treffen und ein bisschen zu quatschen.

The official arriving day was Sunday, 25th august and since that day, we're having the Orientation Week. As the campus is that big and there are so many possibillities to do things, we have a lot of orientation meetings on nearly everything. Tomorrow is one for example "Intercultural Relationships and Sexual Education" and on Friday a "Harrassement Prevention". Sounds funny, right? It's exhausting though, as today we also had the placement test for the japanese classes and oh my gosh, I was screwed. Well, this test is designed for making us fail actually, but nonetheless it felt horrible and I hope, I managed to get into at least 300! There are 8 Japanese Levels in total, starting with J 101 for total beginners up to J 501 for Advanced Japanese. Please wish me luck! But they really set great value on evaluating our japanese, as there was a Listening Comprehension, a short essay, a grammar part as well as Kanji and vocabulary. And if it's still uncertain what level you should take, there's going to be an oral test tomorrow, too! I'm so afraid that I have to take the oral test because I'm still pretty shy at speaking japanese.

Der offizielle Ankunftstag war am Sonntag dem 25. August 2013 und seit diesem Tag haben wir die "Orientierungswoche". Da der Campus so groß ist und es so viele Möglichkeiten gibt, sich einzubringen, haben wir ziemlich viele Orientierungstreffen für so gut wie alles eigentlich. Morgen zum Beispiel eins für "Interkulturelle Beziehung und Sexualkunde" und am Freitag "Mobbing Prävention". Klingt lustig, oder? Es ist dennoch ziemlich anstrengend, da wir heute auch noch den Einstufungstest für Japanisch hatte und oh Gott, ich war so ge'rscht. Nun ja, der Test ist ja dazu konzipiert uns durchfallen zu lassen sozusagen, dass man die guten von den schlechten trennt, aber es hat sich dennoch furchtbar angefühlt! Als könnte ich überhaupt kein Japanisch. Hoffentlich habe ich es dennoch bis mindstens in 300 geschafft, wünscht mir bitte Glück! Es gibt insgesamt 8 Japanischlevel von J101 für komplette Anfänger bis zu J502 für bereits weit Fortgeschrittene. Die Universität hat aber wirklich großen Wert auf die Bewertung gelegt, da es einen Hörverständnisteil gab, einen Aufsatz, einen Grammatikteil, sowie einen Kanji-und einen Vokabelteil. Und wenn nun noch nicht klar ist, in welchen Level man kommt, wird es morgen noch einen mündlichen Test geben. Ich hab solche Angst, dass ich den auch noch machen muss, da ich immer noch ziemlich zurückhaltend beim Japanisch sprechen bin! Auch wenn es sich schon sehr gebessert hat...

There are different kinds of dormitories on the campus,four in total and I'm living in the houses you can see above. The whole area is called "Global Village" and in every room two students are living, so in total 12 students for each of the houses. A friend who studied here before told me, that Global Village is said to be the best out of all and therefore I wanted to come here. I'll show you pictures of my room later, but at the moment it's still really messy as I hadn't had time to go to the city for shopping.
Pictures of the other houses are following, too! There is "Sakura Village", "University Village" and "Komachi Hall", everyone is different and I think that's really thrilling!

Es gibt verschiedene Wohnheime hier auf dem Campus, insgesamt vier, und ich lebe in dem, das ihr oben sehen könnt. Die ganze Häuseransammlung heißt "Global Village" und pro Raum wohnen zwei Studenten zusammen, also pro Haus 12. (Und ja, es ist so klein wie man es auf den Bildern erahnen kann, pro Fenster ein Raum). Ein Freund der letztes Jahr hier studiert hat, empfahl mir Global Village, da es wohl am besten sei, deswegen habe ich mich hierfür eingetragen. Ich werde euch später auch noch Fotos von meinem Zimmer und allem zeigen, aber im Moment sieht es noch ziemlich furchtbar aus, da ich keine Zeit hatte in die Stadt zu gehen und ein bisschen einzukaufen.
Fotos von den anderen Wohnheimen folgen ebenfalls! Es gibt noch "Sakura Village", "University Village" und "Komachi Hall", jedes davon ist ganz anders und ich finde das ziemlich spannend!
